The Goldfish’s Wishes

It all started the day my old pen pal came to visit my coral mansion… Oops, I forgot to introduce myself! My name is July, and I am all orange. My friend is a whale, and he is named Ash.

Anyway, he came to visit my house for the first time! I had no idea how big Ash was, until I opened the white door with my trembling fins…

“Is anyone there?” he yelled, looking around. “Hello?”

I was much smaller than him, and he didn’t see me. Yet I was standing in front of him (his tail fin, rather)and his eyes couldn’t see me. I swam up to his eyes and waved my bright sparkly fins madly.

“Ash!” I shrieked.

His eyes adjusted and saw me. I chuckled for a moment, but before I knew what was happening, he was crushing me in his colossal fins so hard I thought I might puke!

“S-s-stop Ash,” were the words I’d barely managed to croak.

He gave a loud hoot. “Greetings, July! This is your house, eh?”

I nodded briskly. “Yes.”

He patted my back(or slapped, rather). I led him upstairs and introduced him to my mum, dad, aunt and great-uncle while we scoffed oyster biscuits. My mum and dad were very nice to Ash, but great-uncle nearly whacked him with his walking cane! And Aunt Goldie looked so scared I thought she might faint.

When they left the room, Ash and I talked about our dreams.

“I wish I was a goldfish,” Ash moaned.

“I wish I was a whale,” I said dreamily, “because I get to eat yummy plankton!” Ash licked his lips.

“I could avoid sharks,” Ash laughed.

“Not all the time,” I pointed out.

“Yeah, but it’s too late. We aren’t what we want to be,” Ash sighed. His sigh was so big it unbalanced me and I did a belly flop.

“Life isn’t fair,” I said gloomily.
