Adeline and Grumpy Grandma

Swish! Adeline and her best friend, Miranda, twirled through various outfits and styles. Miniskirt? Tick! Cool-looking tie-dye T-shirt? Tick! Platform shoes? Tick!

It was after school, and Adeline and Miranda were designing, making, and putting together outfits for both of them to wear in their school’s Fashion Design Fiesta, which was two weeks away! It was partly a showcase and also a competition as well. Adeline looked forward to it.

“Ooh! Why don’t we add a little bit of glitter on your makeup, and make mine more circus-coloured?!” Adeline exclaimed.

“Exactly!” said Miranda. “Why don’t you do platform shoes, and–”

BOOM! Adeline’s mum and grandma stood at the door to her bedroom. “What is the meaning of all… THIS?” bellowed Grandma. Her hair was crazily frizzy and her eyes red– Adeline didn’t think her grandad would’ve approved of that, either.

“We’re putting together our outfits for the fiesta. This will be a great fashion design experience, ‘cause we wanna be preppy fashion designers!!” Adeline called, before she looked up and realised who she was talking to. Grandma and Mum! Miranda shrank back into the shadows.

Mum narrowed her eyes. “That’s fine, but don’t prance around practically nude and in a miniskirt…” Dad had come around too, to see what was going on.

“DO YOU WANT TO BE A FASHION DESIGNER?” screeched Grandma, stomping into Adeline’s room and ripping up the paper designs of her clothes. “YOU CALL THIS–” She lifted up a tube top– (Miranda winced) “FASHION?! THIS IS NOT FASHION!!

Dad grabbed Grandma’s shoulder. “Relax, mother,” he muttered. “You see, they’re just having fun before the showcase. Nothing big.”

Grandma’s nostrils were inflated with fury. “MY GRANDDAUGHTER WANTS TO BE A MEASLY FASHION DESIGNER, AND BIKINIS AND MINISKIRTS ARE ALL SHE DESIGNS! YOU KNOW I HATE HATE HATE MINISKIRTS!!” Adeline’s mum and dad stood there in shock and tried to calm her down.

Adeline gritted her teeth. “I know that! I do want to be a fashion designer. Grandma– this is fashion! Plus, fashion isn’t those musty mothball clothes that you own.”

Grandma opened her mouth to object when Mum and Dad asked: “Adeline, what do you want to study at uni?”

“Textiles. And fashion design. With Miranda, obviously!”

Mum and Dad frowned. “Hmm… well, if you guys present really well at the Fashion Design Fiesta, then you can be a fashion designer with our support!”

Adeline’s eyes sparkled. “Really???” she cried in delight.

“Yes, really!” her mum laughed. “Really!”

“YESSSSSS!!!!!!” Adeline squealed and hugged Miranda in joy. The two of them pushed past a still-fuming Grandma and pranced into the living room with their tie-dye T-shirts and glittery miniskirts.
